Veterinary in Colombia

In Chinchiná, we partner with Palestina Animal Shelter and Lina's Dog Haven. Volunteers will take part in a public awareness campaign and visit homes, surveying animal populations and promoting a free animal clinic sponsored by ISL. Volunteers will bring adoptable dogs into partner non-profits, providing pet therapy for senior citizens and other populations who might benefit. Volunteers will also have the chance to visit the Universidad de Caldas Veterinary Hospital where they will visit a class, network with students, and shadow veterinarians in small and large animal care.

The goal of ISL's nursing program is to learn about local health care challenges, experience Tanzanian culture, and gain perspective on the global landscape. Work setting will be dependent on number of participants. 1-4 participants: Programming will take place in an ISL partner institution. Volunteers will assist health care providers with patient care. 5+ participants: Programming will take place in an ISL partner community. Volunteers will participate in public health surveying and clinical activities, including interviewing patients, taking vitals, and helping out in the pharmacy. While in Tanzania they will also have the opportunity to learn valuable skills and explore the cultural landscape in a meaningful way. This program is suitable for nurses and nursing students. Continuing education available for RNs.

Optometry in Panama

The goal of ISL's optometry program is to learn about eye care care challenges, experience Panamanian culture, and gain perspective on the global landscape. Volunteers will observe/assist health care providers with eye care assessment. 4+ participants: Programming will take place in an ISL partner community. Volunteers will participate in vision screenings and distribute eyewear.

Physical Therapy in Costa Rica

This program is suitable for PT students and professionals. The goal of ISL's physical therapy program is to learn about local physical therapy challenges, provide PT evaluations and services, experience Costa Rican culture, and gain perspective on the global landscape. Work setting will be dependent on number of participants. 1-5 participants: Programming will take place in an ISL partner institution. Volunteers will assist physical therapists in the provision of care. 6+ participants: Programming will take place in an ISL partner community in addition to the institutional setting. Volunteers will participate in public health surveying and the provision of physical therapy, including orthopedic massage, and soft tissue assessment. PT Continuing Education Credits available.

The goal of ISL's nursing program is to learn about local health care challenges, assist with the provision of patient care, learn more about the nursing profession in another cultural context, and experience the history and culture of Belize. Work setting will be dependent on number of participants. 2-4 participants: Programming will take place in an ISL partner institution. Volunteers will assist health care providers with patient care. 5+ participants: Programming will take place in an ISL partner community. Volunteers will participate in public health surveying and clinical activities, including interviewing patients, taking vitals, basic triage, and assisting with the examination, diagnosis, and treatment process. Sports Without Borders & High School in Colombia

Minimum of 5 volunteers required. ISL's Sports with Borders goal is to use sports as a vehicle for team work, wellness education, and personal growth. Through sports activities and mentorship, volunteers provide children in ISL's partner communities the opportunity to hone their athletic skills while giving sports enthusiasts a chance experience another culture and gain global perspective. While ‘futbol’ is king in Colombia, ISL's welcomes enthusiasts of baseball/softball, basketball, football, or any other team sport to share their passion with kids in ISL partner communities. This program is all-inclusive.

Occupational Therapy in Panama

Current occupational therapy needs in Panama include development of treatment plans for rheumatology, geriatric, and neurology patients. Volunteers work in rural community centers with elders and adults and children with severe disabilities. Veterinary in Costa Rica

Veterinary volunteers will work at Rescate Animal Zooave, assisting with various tasks in the Endangered Wildlife Reproduction Center, the quarantine facility, and the Conservation Park, preparing animal diets, feeding, cleaning and maintaining enclosures, creating environmental enrichment toys, behavioral observations, and gardening/landscaping. Volunteers will also have the chance to visit the National University Veterinary School Hospital for Minor Species.
